The archaic and humour, two threads of recent Romanian art.
“Monstrul, pătratul și hohotul”, curated by Dan Popescu, rearranged the collection of MARe – the Museum of Recent Art in Bucharest from 7 June 2024 to 31 January 2025. The route began with Ion Țuculescu and ended with Megan Dominescu.
The exhibition proposed two lines running through recent Romanian art: the archaic, with its two branches, the monstrous and the geometric, and humour, used as a survival strategy and increasingly bold after 1989. Victoria Zidaru’s installation “Victoria zilei” opened the show in the basement.
The exhibition brought together 80 artists, from Ion Țuculescu, Horia Bernea and Paul Neagu to recent generations, many of them H’art artists.
