Irony, ever since Rostopasca.
Nicolae Comănescu is one of the legionaries of post-1989 art, put through every sieve. He was painting in the 1990s, when many felt that art in traditional media had died and that you could no longer paint Venus’s backside because the portable camcorder had arrived. Founder of the neo-Dada group Rostopasca, Comănescu was a mote in everyone’s eye, betting on irony while the “masters” solemnly pronounced, with a capital letter, “Culture” or “Spirituality”.
On 23 May 2014, as a special Bucharest Gallery Night event, Nicolae Comănescu presented SAMBAdy Must Dye In This CITY at 25 Thomas Masaryk Street.
The presentation text calls him one of the legionaries of post-1989 art: a painter who kept painting in the 1990s, when many declared traditional media dead, and who, as founder of the neo-Dada group Rostopasca, bet on irony while others solemnly pronounced “Culture” and “Spirituality”.
